Just outside Downpatrick on the east bank of the River Quoile is the 16th-century tower house known as Quoile Castle.  It is three storeys high, built out of split stone rubble with sandstone dressings, built by local man Captain West and was inhabited by the West Family into the 18th-century.

The south corner of the castle has fallen down which enables us to see a cross section of the building.  The inner doorway on the ground floor opens into a chamber with a stone vault and a number of gun-loops, beyond this is a second similar chamber.  The first and second floors are accessed by straight stairways, the first floor has two rooms one of which contains a fireplace.

Unfortunately, you are unable to enter the Castle however the grounds around the Castle contain flower beds, picnic tables and a quaint cottage which houses the visitors centre.  Toilets are located at the rear of the building.

Within walking distance visitors can enjoy leisurely walks alone the Quoile riverside to the bird hide which overlooks the pondage all part of the Quoile Countryside Centre.  In the summer the riverside is an array of colour provided by plants such as wild roses, willowherb, purple loosestrife and yellowcress.  Large number of wildfowl breed here, which include mute swans, mallard, tufted duck and the rarely-seen Gadwall.
