Kirkistown Castle
Kirkistown Castle

The castle is currently closed to the public, however it is worth taking time to go a have a walk around the outside.

The first fortification on this site dates back to the 9th century when a round tower was erected.  In 1622 Roland Savage replaced this building  a 3-storey tower house with a rectangular bawn with round flankers at its corners, it stayed occupied until 1731, when unfortunately it was deserted.  In the 1800 Kirkistown Castle was remodelled in Gothic style by a Col. Johnston and in 1836 further work was carried out by Master Montgomery of Greyabbey.  The building unfortunately was left, with partial roof and broken windows, the elements soon took their toll, of the bawn, only the south west wall with its two flankers remain to this day.
