Arthur Chichester was appointed as governor of Carrickfergus in the early 1600 and built Joymount Palace as his home, he also supervised the construction of the stone Town Wall in 1608 which can still be seen today.  At Joymount adjacent to the Town Wall a recreation of the former Jacobean Knot Garden can be found, a delightful, peaceful place to spend some time.  A mural in the archway depicts Sir Arthur walking in the garden, visitors can walk through the garden into the adjoining Shaftesbury Park.
