Inch Abbey

The first monastery on the site of Inch Abbey was originally erected on an island in the Quoile marshes and was a pre-Norman Celtic monastic settlement dating back to 800 AD.  Plundered and raided by the Vikings who came up the Quoile river in a fleet from the sea on several occasions over the centuries, left the monastery in ruins and unfortunately nothing remains of it today but traces of the Early Christian earthworks enclosure can be seen in aerial photographs.

Inch Abbey was built in this area and established as a Cistercian house by John de Courcy in 1177 it was colonised by monks from Furness Abbey in Lancashire in 1180.  Monastic life continued for hundreds of years in the Abbey until the dissolution of the Monastery’s in the 16th century.
