Movilla Abbey
Movilla Abbey

The Abbey in Movilla was founded in 540 by St. Finnian under the patronage of the king of the Dal Fiatach and is believed to have been one of Ulster’s and Ireland’s most important monasteries.  After being plundered it was re-founded as an Augustinian Abbey in the 12th century and survived until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1542.

Movilla Abbey has the best collection of 13th century coffin lids with foliate crosses in the Province, only one stone has survived from the pre 12th century monastery, it is marked with “Or do Dertrend”, meaning “pray for Dertrend”.
